Healing Music Abstract

In recent years we have become increasingly aware that music can heal. Music can help us to tap into our inner potential effecting body, mind and spirit.

We know that music does many things; it can soothe and relax, transport us to the other realms of consciousness and serve as an aid to meditation. It can also help us to keep in touch with our feelings, enhance our sensitivity and enable us to reach our true inner being. I would like to give some references from traditional Indian texts here.

  • In Bharat's divine Natya Shastra he has devised nava rasa siddhant (nine feelings of human beings' or nine types of emotions). He quoted that all the nine rasa convert ultimately into anand (happy) rasa i.e. happiness.
  • In the Sangeeta Ratnakara, written in the 12th century, from chapter 2, the author Sharangdeva, has discussed swadu pindotpatti to mean genes and genetics and music relationships with each other.
  • Conclusion and demonstration.

Circle of Light

The Circle of Light (CoL) is a non-profit, non-religious organization run by volunteers. Founded in 1988, its purpose is to provide a space for personal growth and awareness. There are two meetings each month, held on the first and third Sundays, where speakers share their knowledge and skills. Each speaker gives a presentation in English (no interpretation in Japanese) on mind/ body/ spirit related topics during which the audience can listen, watch, ask questions and participate. There is also a free book, CD and cassette tape exchange.

Entrance to the meetings is JPY800 for members and JPY1000 for non-members. Membership of Circle of Light costs JPY1000 per year and entitles one to receive monthly information on forthcoming events.

Meetings are held in Aoyama Dojo, which is a modern 9mx6.5m multipurpose rental space with full air conditioning, heating, cork floors and cedar wood walls. It is across Brazilian Embassy five minutes walk from subway Gaienmae station on the Ginza subway line. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. meetings start at 6:30 p.m. and finish at 8:30 p.m.
