President Patil to inaugurate cancer centre in Wagholi

May 27, 2011, 03.33am IST

PUNE: President Pratibha Patil will inaugurate the integrated cancer treatment and research centre in Wagholi at 5 pm on May 29.

Addressing a news conference on Thursday, Arvind Kulkarni, director, oncology, at the centre, said the research centre was set up under the cancer research project started in 1985 by the Bharatiya Sanskriti Darshan Trust to explore the role of ayurveda in cancer treatment and supporting treatment under allopathy.

So far, over 4,500 patients suffering from various cancers at various stages have been treated at the centre, Kulkarni added.

The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre has donated Rs 1.75 crore for a state-of-the-art radiotherapy machine, Kulkarni said.

"Similarly, after examining the functioning and activities of the cancer centre, the union ministry of ayurveda, yoga, unani, siddha and homoeopathy (AYUSH) gave a grant of Rs 3.5 crore under its centre of excellence scheme," he said.
