Sagar Morankar to receive Prabhakar Sardeshmukh Scholarship

Mr. Sagar Morankar is to receive the ‘Parampujya Prabhakar Keshav Sardeshmukh Maharaj Scholarship', awarded by two institutions -‘Swaranand Pratishthan' and ‘Darshnam Japan.' The scholarship will be awarded by the eminent Sitar player Ustad Usman Khan.
This was informed by Sardeshmukh Maharaj's son and a renowned sitar player Pundit Chandrakant Sardeshmukh in a press conference today. Mr. Vijay Magikar, Trustee of Swaranand Pratishthan, Mr. Prakash Bhonde and others were present at the press conference.
Mr. Chandrakant Sardeshmukh said, “Sardeshmukh Maharaj guided several youngsters in the field of Indian culture and arts throughout his life. That being the reason we - myself and my wife Pooja - decided to award this scholarship in his name.”
The award ceremony will be held in Manohar Mangal Karyalaya at 6 o'clock in the evening on November 25, 2008. The annual scholarship worth Rs 20,000 is being awarded for the first time this year. After the awarding ceremony, Mr. Sagar Morankar will present his art in a vocal concert followed by a Sitar concert by Pt Chandrakant Sardeshmukh. Mr. Sagar Morankar is a student of Pt. Uday Bhavalkar and is learning the art of Dhrupad Gayaki (Dhrupad singing) by residing with Mr. Bhavalkar. Mr. Morankar is blind and has received his formal education in the Pune Home for Blind and Mamasaheb Mohol College.
He has received the Central Government Scholarship and the Sawai Gandharva Scholarship in the past. Mr. Magiakar said that the Scholarship will be awarded every year to an indigent, deserving aspiring student in the field of Music in the name of Sardeshmukh Maharaj.
